How much personal information do I have to share?
You don’t have to share personal information. When you call, we’ll ask you for:
- Your name (you can use an alias or your initials; it doesn’t have to be your real name)
- Your phone number (so we can call you back if we get disconnected)
- Your zip code (so we can ensure our services reach more people like you in the future)
Calling the helpline can be ANONYMOUS! Don’t let concerns about your identity be the reason you wait.
What happens when I call?
When you call 1-800-923-4357, you’ll reach a caring counselor who will talk with you for about 20 minutes. They’ll ask about why you called, find out what’s going on, help you process what you’re going through, and identify your next steps.
The caring counselor will assess you for safety. If you are at risk of suicide or self-harm, we’ll work with you to create a safety plan that keeps you safe.
